Abstract:
Abstract The use of pharmacologic ergogenic aids by sportmen and women all over the world is now a global issue. The rate at which sport men and women now fall victims of doping has become life threatening. Cases of athelets who tested positive to one psychoactive drug or the other had been in the news over the past three decades.Researchers have probed into the effects of drugs with different findings that are crucial to the health of individuals. These researchers investigated into the determining factors of sportmen and women consumption of pharmacologic substances to enhance performance in their different sports in Ondo and Ekiti States of Nigeria. The population of this study comprised sportmen and women who train at the sport stadia in the two states as well as those in higher institutions in the states.Convenient sampling technique was adopted to select one hundred male and female athlets ( 50 from each state), who have either participated in state, national or international competition as well as inter- college and inter University sports.Three hypotheses were formulated for the study at 0.05 level of significance.Self structured questionnaire of the Likert scale type was used to elicit information from the sportmen and women.Frequency count and percentage were adopted to analyze the demographic data while weighted Mean (wx) and chi - square X2 statistical tools were used to test the three hypotheses. The findings shows that winning at all cost and monetary rewards are the major determinants of sports men and women involving in the consumption of pharmacologic ergogenic aids while the variable of fame was not significant. Some of the recommendations suggested were that; there should be more severe penalties for any athlete caught in this act other than just banning them for few years. The monetary rewards for athletes should be standardized. Abstract:
Abstract The main purpose of the study was to identify the perceived occupational health hazards among health care workers in government hospitals in Ondo state. The socio demographic factors considered were age, level of education, job type, gender and location. To achieve the purpose of the study, ten research questions and five null hypotheses were postulated.Cross -sectional survey design was adopted and purposive sampling procedure was employed to select 1071 respondents from 20 health institutions owned by government in Ondo State. The instrument for data collection was a 55 - itemmodified 7 - point bipolar adjective scale questionnaire known as HWPOHHQ. Mean and standard deviation were used to analyze the data collected. The five null hypotheses postulated for the study were tested using the t- test and ANOVA at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study showed that the health care workers perceived occupational health hazards (OHH) positively in their work places and that health care workers perception of OHH was dependent on their age, level of education, job type, gender and location. The study further revealed that many health care workers could recognize occupational health hazard but failed to take neccessary precaution. Finally, age, level of education, job type, gender and location showed statistically significant influence on the five dimensions of OHH namely physical, chemical, biological, mechanical and psychological. The researcher made the following recommendations among others :the hospitals management should encourage safety education/ seminar / workshop among the health care workers;organization of health and safety week should be mandatory in hospitals ;regular in- training for all health workers should be encouraged by the government to acquaint with the latest technology in the health care sector.
